Exact Obedience and Breaking Engagements
Hello!
Life is crazy busy in my new area. Here is a quick update this week:
- I love my new companion! Elder Bretey is pushing me to learn Spanish as soon as possible. He corrects me whenever I make a mistake (even during prayers), but he does it with so much genuine love that I don’t even mind it haha.
- I got to work at the temple today! Elder Bretey and I spent hours helping the temple staff catch up on laundry. It was wonderful being in the House of the Lord again. I’ll take any opportunity to spend time there.
- Elder Bretey and I are both new in our area. We came in with no investigators and a struggling ward. This past week, we have gone through the area book and texted most of the people who are in there. Seven of them texted us back wanting to learn more!
Story of the week:
We accidentally broke up a marriage this week! We were teaching a young woman who was a member of the church. We mentioned a story about a woman who was engaged, but got a prompting from God to serve a mission and decided to pause her engagement to go out and serve. The young woman we were teaching said, “I’m engaged but after hearing this story, I feel like I should go on a mission too!” We tried to backtrack and say that it is fine to be married and not every young woman needs to serve a mission, but she was so excited. She said, “I’m going to tell everyone on my mission that Elder Bennion and Elder Bretley stopped me from getting married!” Thankfully, when she called her fiancé, he was just as excited for her and said he would wait for her to get back to get married. We were feeling pretty guilty though!
Quick spiritual thought: I’ve learned a lot about exact obedience. There are lots of rules that a missionary has to follow, even small ones like no chewing gum. I’ve realized that these rules are all opportunities to get blessings. More importantly, if I’m exactly obedient, missionary work is so much easier than if I were to waste energy and effort picking and choose what rules to follow. As Pres. Nelson said, “ “Obedience brings success; exact obedience brings miracles.”
Elder Bretey has been an amazing example of this. I feel so blessed to be able to work with him. He is exactly obedient and fearless in preaching the gospel, because he knows the Lord is with him.
If you want to see miracles in your life, follow Elder Bretey’s example! I promise that as you focus on being exactly obedient, the Lord will open the heavens for you.
I love you guys!
